A Journey Through Time
A Journey Through Time: The New Window Art Installation at TODCO Group
June 12th, 2024
TODCO Group is proud to unveil a new window art installation that is a vibrant homage to the history, soul and activism of San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. This installation features the compelling street photography of Lee Sims, the evocative portraits by Ira Nowinski, and the dynamic San Francisco themed artwork by Michael Rios. Featured in this art installation are images of TODCO Group’s very own founders who worked tirelessly through activism to set the foundation for everything and everyone our nonprofit continues to fight for in the city of San Francisco to this day.
Lee Sims: Capturing the Essence of 1970s SoMa The heart of the installation begins with the striking black and white images captured by Lee Sims. His photographs from the 1970s document the South of Market neighborhood redevelopment and the efforts of Tenants and Owners in Opposition to Redevelopment (TOOR). Sims’ lens focused on the single-room occupancy hotels, the residents affected by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency projects, and the spirited activism that ensued. These images not only depict a critical moment in the city’s history but also serve as a testament to the resilience of its community.
Ira Nowinski: Portraits of a Community Complementing Sims’ historical narrative are the front-facing portraits by Ira Nowinski. Nowinski’s work, which adorns the entryways and hallways of various TODCO buildings, provides a personal touch to the installation. His portraits bring to life the faces of those who have called SoMa home, adding depth and humanity to the understanding of the district’s past and present. Truly capturing the soul of each subject through his timeless photography.
Michael Rios: A Vision of San Francisco The installation is brought to full color with the inclusion of Michael Rios’ artwork. Rios, a Chicano visual artist, muralist, and guitarist, infuses his pieces with a blend of cultural heritage and contemporary issues. His San Francisco themed works offer a vibrant and thought-provoking perspective on the city’s growth and the diverse communities that contribute to its ever-changing landscape.
This window art piece installation is more than just a display; it’s a narrative journey through the decades, highlighting the transformation of San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood and the indomitable spirit of its people. We invite you to experience this powerful exhibit and reflect on the stories this artwork tells about TODCO Group’s role in SoMa’s past, present, and future.
